SARINZ is a small organisation. This means employment opportunities are limited but, when vacancies do arise, external advertisements will be posted on this website.

Why become an Instructor?

As an Instructor on the SAR programme you will have the opportunity to develop your SAR skills and knowledge in a compressed time frame.  You will assist in delivering training to a wide range of participants in varied environments and learn the small adaptations unique to each of these environments.  You will have access to up-to-date national and international case studies and information as well as partake in informal discussions and reviews of the techniques and methodology to improve them for future courses.

The skills and knowledge you develop will be directly transferable to your own SAR group for both operational and training use.  You will be more able to assist in running informal in-house maintenance training and benefit from learning the techniques that make setting up and running training easier on yourself whilst still proving exciting and challenging to the participants.

You will have the opportunity to interact with other SAR personnel and learn from there experiences as well as share your experiences in an effort to improve SAR and help others save lives.

Instructor positions

Different levels of Instructor are available within the SAR programme depending on the knowledge, skills and attributes of the applicant and the positions that require filling at the time of application. The graph below depicts the 5 differing Instructor positions in the SAR programme

Most applicants will likely start at one of the two lower positions and then progress up the levels as their skills, knowledge and experience increase.

Opportunities exist for applicants to become Certified SARINZ Instructors to further develop skills and knowledge and to become future Assessors. As a rule SARINZ will only accept Assessors with a proven subject knowledge and skill base to meet its stated objective as New Zealand’s international training centre of search and rescue excellence.
