Grant has a background in alpine climbing, rock climbing, and skiing for the last 25 years in New Zealand and overseas. He has recently taken up the sport of caving.

Grant has spent several winter seasons working as a ski patroller and for the Department of Conservation Aoraki / Mt Cook National Park from 1991 to 2004 undertaking 150 Alpine Search and Rescue Operations during this time. He has traveled to US, Canada, and Australia to further his rescue knowledge at conferences and workshops.

As the SARINZ programme manager rescue he has developed standards and courses for the SAR community in New Zealand and overseas in the areas of rope rescue, helicopter rescue, leadership and incident management.

Grant has been the lead writer of the Back Country Technical Rescue Standards and the Incident Management Guidelines for NZLSAR. He is also the writer of the soon to be published Alpine Rescue Techniques, Mountain Safety Council Manual 26.
