This course is designed to understand the roles and responsibilities within helicopter rescues as well as the use of safety equipment and procedures during a helicopter rescue. Identifying and minimizing hazards inherent in helicopter rescue and safe approaches to helicopters during rescue operations are also covered along with in flight emergency procedures and communication techniques used in such rescues. Operational procedures in and around helicopters, their configuration for rescue, loading a hovering helicopter and slinging a human load are also taught and these skills practiced. The course requires helicopter flying time.

Duration: The core course material is normally delivered over two days. There is also Introductory work while assessment occurs alongside the training and through a reflective practice component
Course recommended for: Rescue personnel active and experienced in the alpine, climbing, white water and caving environments.
Prerequisites: Competency in either Foundation Rope or Personal Rope skills for rescue and continued participation in a SAR rescue team or similar.
Venue recommendations: access to classroom type facilities and local helicopter rescue services.
Note additional costs: The local course organiser is to provide helicopter flying time of around 2 hours at their cost. This course includes two modules, one of which is a unit standard and requires a $25.00 registration “Hook on” fee to be paid if the student is not already registered with an active NZQA number. This is a TEC requirement
Participant requirements: harness, helmet, selection of hardware, locking karabiner, selection of software including cowstail and prusiks and clothing suitable for work in the field regardless of weather.
A complete list of equipment will be supplied upon application for this course.
