Foundation Rope Rescue

This course is designed to focus on low angle rope rescue and working safely at an edge. The appropriate use of ropes and equipment is covered along with the skills needed to undertake rescues in accessible terrain with a slope of up to 30 degrees. It includes the use of suitable knots, anchors and pulley systems and the safe movement of subjects in stretchers. Edge kit and jiggerbuilding and use is also covered. Risk management and safety in rope rescue operations are emphasised.

Duration:

  • Pre-workshop: Consists of reading, exercises and written activities designed to introduce you to the subject of foundation rope rescue. This needs to be completed prior to the practical workshop. 
  • Workshop: Consists of the practical component of the course usually delivered over one evening and two days. Timing is approximately 6pm to 9pm on the first evening and then 8am until 6pm on the following two days. 
  • Post-workshop: Consists of reflective practice exercises and written activities designed to reinforce and extend the subject of foundation rope rescue.

Course recommended for: all search and rescue personnel active in the field.

Prerequisites: Outdoor experience that ensures safety in low angle environments is preferred.

Venue recommendations: access to classroom type facilities plus a structure 5 - 10 metres in height for edge kit use on 1st daysuch as a cliff or building.

Low angle slope, road embankment, steep track up to 30 degrees for 2nd day.

Venue hire, participant accommodation and catering are a local cost.

Eligible for NZLSAR subsidy

Equipment requirements: Sit harness, Climbing helmet, Abseil or belay device, Locking carabiner, Webbing sling, Prusik cord 6mm x 3.5m, Pack, Boots, Warm base layers, Wet weather jacket and pants, Leather gloves,  Headlamp and Personal medication/first aid kit.

 A complete list of equipment will be supplied upon application for this course.
