
This course is designed to explore the factors involved in successful searching and introduces the concept of Lost Person Behaviour (LPB) and profiling and the impact that these have on searches. A variety of search methods for both day and night, responsive and unresponsive subjects are explained and practiced in different situations. The Search Methods course analyses and applies knowledge and techniques to search practice and decision making for use in the field in varied environments.
Duration:
Pre-workshop: Consists of reading, exercises and written activities designed to introduce you to the subject of search methods. This needs to be completed prior to the practical workshop.
Workshop: Consists of the practical component of the course usually delivered over two days and one night. Timing is approximately 8am until 10pm on the first day and then 8am until 4pm on the second day.
Post-workshop: Consists of reading, exercises and written activities designed to reinforce and extend the subject of search methods.
Course recommended for: all search and rescue personnel, outdoor industry or similar and is regarded as a core course for SAR.
Prerequisites: To attend this course, you must be competent in outdoor skills, in tune with nature and preferably involved in some aspect of Search and Rescue (or similar).
Equipment requirements: Working whistle, Compass, Two torches/lights (ideally 1 headlamp and a bright handheld spot light/torch), SAR or Hi-Vis vest (or similar), Boots or gumboots, Warm base layers, Wet weather jacket and pants and Personal medication/first aid kit.
Venue recommendations: classroom type setting for inside work, Overhead Projector and screen and access to a mixture of bush, forest, river environments for outdoor elements. eg: school, scout, outdoor pursuits camp.
Venue hire, participant accommodation and catering are a local cost.
