Alan is a Wanaka farmer with a strong background in tramping, climbing and skiing, and active SAR involvement since the 1970s.

He is deputy chair of the Otago/Southland regional land SAR committee and is a SAR Adviser in Wanaka.

"The creation of an institute encompassing all facets of SAR through training, research and support is a natural progression. By providing SAR personnel with the knowledge and systems that create maximum effectiveness we can 'help others save lives'".
