Jack has a long association with SAR as an active tramper and hunter. In the 1980s he became an Adviser in Wellington SAR. He was Convenor of the FMC SAR Subcommittee from 1990-93, the precursor of NZLSAR.

He served as an FMC nominee on the NZMSC Council for a number of years; was the convener of the bushcraft committee; is currently the convenor of the Firearms Committee; was Chairperson of the Executive; and was the Chair of the Council from 1990-92 and again from 1998-2000. Jack is a Senior Lecturer in Earth Sciences at Victoria University.
