Track and Clue Awareness
This course is the entry level course for the tracking series. It introduce's participants to clue awareness, heightened observation and man tracking skills. Participants learn to distinguish between the characteristics of an undisturbed environment and the characteristics caused by human passage through the environment. Practical exercises are undertaken to learn how to calibrate and use a tracking stick, to track human sign in a variety of terrain and explore some basic principles of processing clue sites.

Duration:
Pre-workshop: Consists of reading, exercises and written activities designed to introduce you to the subject of track and clue awareness. This needs to be completed prior to the practical workshop.
Workshop: Consists of the practical component of the course usually delivered over two days and one night. Timing is approximately 8am until 10pm on the first day and then 8am until 4pm on the second day.
Post-workshop: Consists of reading, exercises and written activities designed to reinforce and extend the subject of track and clue awareness.
Course recommended: for all search and rescue personnel both as an awareness and introduction to the world of tracking. Regarded as a core course for SAR.
Prerequisites: To attend this course, you must be competent in outdoor skills, in tune with nature and preferably involved in some aspect of Search and Rescue (or similar).
Venue recommendations: classroom type setting for inside work with 1-2 large whiteboards, Overhead projector, Powerpoint projector (not essential) OHP/PowerPoint screen, multi box and extension cord. Access to a mixture of bush, forest, river environments for outdoor elements. eg: school, scout, or outdoor pursuits camp.
Participant requirements: Two torches/lights (1 with a "clean" light, LED hand held torch or similar and another hand held spotlight, Wide brimmed hat recommended but not essential, SAR or Hi-Vis vest (or similar), Boots or Gumboots, Base layers - Top, bottom, hat and warm jacket, Wet weather jacket and pants and Personal medication/first aid kit .
Venue hire, participant accommodation and catering are a local cost.
